In contemplating what's known as -flammable ice,- scientists have found that infinitesimal air pockets inside the weird material contain life. These discoveries could advise the journey to distinguish extraterrestrial life. Flammable ice, otherwise called methane hydrate, is made when methane gas is caught inside ice's atomic structure. Sheets of this solidified gas and ice contain infinitesimal air...

Two rovers are booked to launch toward the Red Planet this late spring: NASA’s Mars 2020 vehicle and Rosalind Franklin, a joint exertion of the European and Russian space offices. Both six-wheeled robots will look for indications of old Mars life, and NASA’s art will likewise collect and reserve promising examples for inevitable come back to Earth, with an appearance here that may be happening as ahead of...

Starlink is SpaceX's effort to surround our planet in a constellation of up to 42,000 satellites and beam high-speed internet to any location on Earth, dwarfing the number of 2,000 active satellites in orbit today. The company has already launched 300 satellites, with more than 1,000 set to follow by the end of 2020. However, many have raised concerns about the collision risk posed by these satellites,...

When one first focuses on the Ultra Deep Field image, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2004, it appears to be just a photo of the night sky. Dots, stars at first glance, clutter the image, but a longer, closer look leads to wonder and amazement. The image, which is a piece of the sky about the size of a penny at arm's length, shows that the "stars" are really galaxies, an estimated 10,000!

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are one of the biggest astronomical mysteries of the last decade. First observed in 2007, astronomers have detected over two dozen instances of the powerful but fleeting signals from space. Researchers don't know exactly what they are, but there have been plenty of proposals including alien messages (of course), signals from collapsing black holes or neutron stars, and energy from...

If you love space and astronomy, 2018 will be an exciting year. NASA has announced windows of time for sending spacecraft to Mars and the sun. Japanese and American probes already in space are set to enter orbit around two near Earth asteroids. And a variety of eclipses and meteor showers offer ample opportunities for skygazing.
